A Pilot Study of Engineering Students’ Competency Based Assessment (CBA) in a Project-Based Learning (PjBL) Experience

Introduction

This article is written to explain the concept of project based learning (PjBL) by utilizing the Competency Based Assessemnt (CBA) focusing on engineering students product development for subject J3012 (machining). This PjBL concept aims to improve the self-regulation of Mechanical Engineering Students in Kota Bharu Polytechnic, Kelantan when used Project based learning process in product development that special touch competency based assessement in measurement & evaluation engineering knowledge and soft skills , otherwise this PjBL-CBA concept will generate a collaborative learning in product development and evaluation among engineering students at Machaning Lab (2), Mechanical Department, Politeknik Kota Bharu.

Research objectives :This action research was implemented to find the best solution for 21 century learning style that match with the globalization needs. It’s also to find out the best solution in new learning methods that can replace the traditional learning process in product development at machining section (workshop/lab). This pilot study was implemented to full fill the quality of engineering learning process includes ; monitoring , evaluation and product producing for subject J3012 (machining section) match with PjBL ad CBA caterias at Mechanical Department, PKB.

Problem statements :The convensional process of product development become unecpetable in product evaluation by using traditional method, it look lack of proccess monitoring and data collection. While proccess is runing, whole proceess not stuctured as well need, otherwise the report come at the end of process become parallel submition note and data’s. This summeritve data not support the quality needs. Some report look similiar with others. So, this research was carry over to produce the process that can evaluate in wright setuations when process is runing. The formmative assessement become easly to supervisor and engineering students evaluate themselve in weekly progress. The way of formative assessment become easily for supervisor to evaluate match with engineering standard needs.

Conclusions :This proccess of PjBL:CBA make smooth operation of project 1 & 2 development by using PjBL concept and CBA evaluation. Its also carry on to assess the product quality refer to students’ result achivement of using PjBL concept and CBA. After PjBL and CBA completed testing, its will piloting among engineering students to access self-regulation when PjBL:CBA was introduced as new PnP at lab or workshop at Mechanical Dept, PKB. Though it is difficult to generalize the results due to the limited number of self-reported data and the absence of observational data, the exploratory study provides evidence and support for the adoption of CBA match with overaal imperacials aspectations for polytechnic produce high expectation of engineering students.

Pengenalan

Bersandarkan kepada pembangunan projek kejuruteraan sebenar yang berlandaskan sosio konstruktisme, Pembelajaran Berasaskan Projek (PjBL) dilihat amat berhubung kait dengan asas pembangunan aktiviti-aktiviti kerja yang selaras serta piawai. Pembinaan projek seringkali melibatkan pengguna dalam metaksir, mentelaah dan menfomulasi penyelesaian kepada pemasalahan yang timbul. Matlamat utama dan objektif setiap dapatan serta hasil kerja projek semasa perlaksanaannya melalui konsep PjBL menjadikan para pelajar lebih fleksi dan terarah dalam membentuk penyelesaian baru yang lebih komprehensif (Collins et al, 1989). Ia berlaku melalui arahan dan gerak kerja yang sistematik yang terwujud di dalam modul PjBL. Yang dibangunkan untuk kegunaan Pengurusan Projek (J5012) pelajar Kejuruteraan Mekanikal, Politeknik Kota Bharu, Kementerian Pengajian Tinggi Malaysia. (Synteta, P. ,2001,2002,2003).

Project Based Learning (PjBL) adalah merupakan model terkini bagi proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran (pembangunan kurikulum dan pendekatan kepada proses pengarahan gerak kerja projek) yang mana ia berpusatkan pelajar dalam meguasai sesuatu objektif pembinaan projek-projek kejuruteraan secara individu dan berkumpulan. Ia memancu para pelajar dalam mentaksir, mengembangkan olahan ilmu dan kemahiran yang telah diperolehi atau dipelajari dalam menbentuk ilmu baru yang lebih komprehensif . ia juga menjana para pelajar dalam berkerja secara sistematik megikut matlamat yang sebenar serta mengikut piawaian gerak kerja kejuruteraan yang global. Pelajar, melaluinya akan dapat membina pemahaman ilmu pembinaan projek yang maju baru mengikut gaya pembelajaran tersendiri yang piawai. Model PjBL ini merupakan komponen utama dalam menghasilkan pelajar yang dapat menguasai ilmu baru, berkerja secara realiti piawai, pembanguan produk yang inovatif serta global.
